Leading up to the coronavirus pandemic, more than 820 million people went to bed hungry (DGC, UN).
The UN now says this number can double due to the devastation caused by the virus. Among those countries hit hard are Iraq and Yemen.
The current coronavirus pandemic has intensified the poverty level in both countries. For example in Yemen, 80% of the Yemeni population was at risk of hunger and disease pre-Covid-19. One cannot imagine the situation now following the spread of coronavirus and the ongoing devastation of conflict.
Iraq on the other hand has recorded its highest single-day rise in COVID-19 cases on the 1st September. Since then cases and deaths are increasing exponentially. With the very difficult financial situation and ongoing conflicts with Daesh (ISIS), poor Iraqi families are finding it difficult to make ends meet.
If we don’t help these poor families in Yemen and Iraq today, who else will?
