You give a poor man a fish and you feed him for a day. You teach him to fish and you give him an occupation that will feed him for a lifetime.
Despite Iraq becoming one of the first countries to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, traditional cultural values have dictated that men are the main breadwinners and women are usually left to household duties. This has caused an issue however with regards to widows who are sometimes left to raise three to four children following the death of their husband – and with little to no qualifications of their own. Approximately 15% of the women in Iraq are part of the labour force and this figure needs to increase if they are to gain financial independence.
Microfinance is therefore a concept we are keen to implement. By empowering widows as well as young adults or older teenagers, we can give them the tools to gain confidence in their ability to shape and rebuild their own lives. While there are unfortunately still some cultural barriers to this, we have found through our research, that more and more widows are willing to learn new skills in order to provide for their families – without relying on help from charities or extended family.
