CASE STUDY

- VOCATIONAL TRAINING FOR WIDOWS -

A widow practicing in one of our vocational training programs

Problem

After the death of their husbands, who is usually the main source of financial security for them and their children, the widows are left with no one to support them financially and lacking any skills they find it difficult to earn an income of their own.

Challenge

Many of the widows we support are illiterate, left school at an early age and lack skills due to poverty, early marriage and misinformed cultural traditions. Many of them possess the passion to become independent but lack the opportunities to help them become self-sufficient.

Result

Working with the Al-Zahra institution in Karbala, Noor Orphans Fund (NOF) supplied materials and covered transport costs for 9 women to start their sewing training.

The widows were keen and motivated to learn and have said they would like to continue at home to support their families financially. Some would even like their daughters to learn during the summer holidays.

This opportunity provides hope for the widows – many of whom can continue the skills learned to earn an income of their own and support their families.
