FORGOTTEN ORPHANS – FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Forgotten Orphans campaign?

Throughout the months of Muharram and Safar, Noor Orphans Fund (NOF) will run a campaign called the Forgotten Orphans that aims to get new sponsors for orphans in Iraq

What does NOF orphan sponsorship include?

It supports the widows and orphans by giving them a monthly salary that helps them buy essential supplies such as basics of food, clothing as well as education supplies and other essential living costs that are very much needed.

What does it mean to sponsor an orphan?

It is a duty for us all to do whatever we can to help the orphans.  Allah (swt) says in the Holy Qur’an: Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense [the religion]? For that is the one who drives away the orphan” (Al Ma’un: 1-2). If we ignore our orphans, we are not following our belief and religion.

It is narrated that Imam Ali (as) while in his last breaths of his life was giving his death will to his sons (A) saying: “Allah Allah with your orphans, do not ignore their cries, and do not allow them to get lost in your presence, for I heard the holy messenger (PBUH) of Allah say: “Whoever helps an orphan until he becomes independent, Allah will make the reward of the heavens an obligation, just as he made the punishment of hell fire obligatory for the one who unlawfully eats the money of an orphan.“

Indeed, his sons cared so much for the orphans and their fight for justice and equality meant that they also left young orphans behind.  The battle of Karbala resulted in many wives being widowed and children being orphaned. We tend to remember these orphans only at the time of Muharram and Safar. Are we going to do the same for the forgotten orphans of Iraq?

How much is it to sponsor an orphan?

Sponsors can choose any of the following types of sponsorship:

  1. Full sponsorship: This means you sponsor one orphan by paying £40 a month. This is equivalent to just over £1 a day.
  2. Co-sponsorship: This means you share sponsorship of an orphan with someone else. You pay £20 a month. You can share with someone you know or we can find another co-sponsor.
  3. Family sponsorship: A unique opportunity to sponsor a whole family of 3 – 5 orphans and their mother for £200 a month.

When does the campaign begin and when will it end?

The campaign will begin on 1st Muharram (likely 20th August 2020) and end at the end on 29th Safar (likely 17th October 2020).

How does NOF define an orphan?

We define an orphan as a child under the age of 17 who has lost his/her father and their guardian is financially poor.

Do we have a web page where we direct people to become a sponsor?

Yes. Each fundraiser will have a web page on our website specific for their campaign.  Once you share your specific web page, people will be able to register to sponsor an orphan through this page.  We have decided to give you your own web page so we can send you a report of how well your campaign is progressing.

How many orphans are we aiming to get sponsored in this campaign?

We are aiming to get 1,000 orphans sponsored in this campaign. With your help we can achieve this inshAllah.

Do sponsors get a confirmation receipt?

Yes absolutely.

How do the funds reach the families we are sponsoring?

Once NOF received the funds, it will transfer the money to Iraq.  In Iraq, NOF full time representatives will receive the funds and distribute it to the orphan’s family each month.

What countries does NOF sponsor orphans in?

At the moment we are only sponsoring orphans in Iraq.  We aim to expand to other countries such as Yemen and Syria in the future.

Which cities does NOF operate in iraq?

Najaf, Karbala, Balad, Baghdad and Kirkuk.

Can the sponsors meet the orphans they have sponsored and get their details?

Yes, they are able to meet their sponsored child in Iraq if they wish to do so.  This needs to be arranged with NOF offices in Iraq.  Once the sponsor registers to a full sponsor an orphan or to sponsor a family, thewill receive a sponsorship card with details about their sponsored orphan, including their name, picture and some other details about the orphan.

Please note that this does not apply to the co-sponsorship.

Can I sponsor more than one orphan?

Yes, absolutely. There is no limit on the number of orphans you can sponsor.

Can I choose which orphan I want to sponsor?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to choose which orphan one wants to sponsor. But please feel free to get in touch with us if you have some specific requirements about the orphan(s) you would like to sponsor (eg. age, gender, city, etc…)

Can the sponsor get any regular updates about their sponsored orphans?

Yes, donors on the full sponsorship and/or family sponsorship will receive regular updates about their sponsored orphan(s).

Do I as the fundraiser get any updates on my progress?

Yes. We will send you regular reports to update you on the number of people who sponsored orphans via your fundraising web page.

Are there any NOF admin charges?

While we have many volunteers who regularly work with us, we also hire incredibly hard-working full-time staff to ensure they do what’s needed to support our sponsored orphans and widows.

NOF is an independent charity that is not funded by any other institution. This means that the expenses we incur in order to function has to be covered by us.

Approximately 9% of the donations we collect is spent on management and support costs. This covers many expenses, including money transfer costs, office rent, staff (in Iraq and UK) salaries, costs to visit the orphaned families on a regular basis and other vital support costs.

We also invest around 11% in marketing and fundraising. This incredibly helps in generating income and doubling your donations.

We are proud to be a transparent charity.  All our income and expenses are made available online every year in the Charity Commission’s website.
